Building Microservices with Spring Boot

Spring Boot has become the de facto standard for building microservices in the Java ecosystem. Its convention-over-configuration approach and rich ecosystem make it ideal for distributed systems.

Why Microservices?

Microservices architecture breaks monolithic applications into smaller, independently deployable services. Benefits include:

  • Independent scaling - Scale services based on demand
  • Technology flexibility - Use different tech stacks per service
  • Fault isolation - Failures don't cascade
  • Team autonomy - Teams own entire services

Core Patterns

Service Discovery

Use Eureka or Consul for dynamic service registration:

  5. Monitor everything - Metrics, logs, and distributed tracing

  • Operational overhead - Automate deployment with CI/CD
